Studied at Magdalen College, Oxford and Royal College of Music, London. Met Tim Rice in 1965 and together wrote Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (1968) and Jesus Christ Superstar (1970). Composed the music for Jeeves (1975), Evita (1978), Tell Me on a Sunday (1980), Cats (1981) and Starlight Express (1984) and The Phantom of the Opera (1986). Later successes include Sunset Boulevard and The Beautiful Game. Knighted in 1992.
