Made film debut in The Heroine of Mons (1914). Made stage debut in Peg o’ My Heart (1917) when invalided home during WWI. Successful films include Of Human Bondage (1934) and Pygmalion (1938) but best known for role in Gone With the Wind (1939). Produced and directed films during WWII. Plane shot down by Nazis, believing Winston Churchill to be on board, when returning from Lisbon.
