Born 1911 - South China. Died 1968 - English writer and poet.

Father was a missionary in China. Educated at the Royal Academy Schools. First book was the children’s story Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor (1939). Published The Craft of the Lead Pencil (1946). Wrote the Gothic fantasy trilogy (1946-59) which includes the novel Gormenghast. Also published volumes of verse, a ballad and sketches as well as illustrating several classics.
