Born 1838. Died 1907 - English chemist.

Studied at Royal College of Chemistry. While trying to isolate quinine (to treat malaria) he extracted a purple dye named mauveine. Established a factory to manufacture this dye. led to the development of the synthetic dyestuffs industry. Sold his dye works in 1874 to concentrate on his chemical research. Elected to the Royal Society in 1866, knighted in 1906.
