Trained at the Old Vic Theatre School. Member of the English Stage Company, joined the National Theatre in 1963. Married Laurence Olivier in 1961. Worked in television including the mini-series Stalin (1992) and films including Enchanted April (1992), The Scarlet Letter (1995) and Tea with Mussolini (1999).
