Born 1761. Died 1821 - Scottish civil engineer.

Studied at Edinburgh University. Moved to London as an engineer. Became famous for constructing bridges including those at Kelso, Leeds, Boston, New Galloway, Southwark and Waterloo. He built many canals, drained fens and designed many docks including London, Liverpool and Dublin. Constructed the breakwater at Plymouth as well as improving harbours and dockyards.
