Born 1890 - West Indies. Died 1979 - British novelist.

Pseudonym of Gwen Williams. Moved to England to train at RADA. Married the Dutch poet, Max Hamer, and went to live on Continent. Published The Left Bank and Other Stories (1927), followed by four novels known as Quartet. Best known novel published in 1966 was Wide Sargasso Sea.
