Born 1886. Died 1978 - English botanist and ecologist.
Educated at University College, London. Director of Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew form 1943 to 1956. Best known books are Downs and Dunes (1952) and Weeds and Aliens (1961). Founded the British Ecological Society in 1917.
