Began as stand-up comic and impressionist before moving to radio with the Goon Show (1951-60). Film debut was Penny Points to Paradise (1951). International reputation established with films Lolita (1962) and Dr Strangelove (1963). Best remembered for French detective Inspector Clouseau. Academy nomination for Being There (1979).
