Known as Manny Shinwell. Entered Parliament in 1931. Defeated Ramsay MacDonald in 1935 at Seaham Harbour, Durham. Drafted manifesto on which Labour won the 1945 election. Nationalised the mines in 1946. Minister of Defence (1950-51). Parliamentary Labour Party chairman (1964-67). Created Companion of Honour in 1965, awarded life peerage in 1970.
