Originally John Rowlands. Adopted by a merchant in New Orleans. Involved in explorations of Abyssinia, Palestine, Turkey, Persia, Tanganyika and Congo Free State. Ordered to “find Livingstone” which he did in 1871 in Tanganyika. Discovered Lake Edward and Mount Ruwenzori. Became British subject in 1892.
