David Steel
Born on 31st of March 1938
Born 1938 - Scottish politician, past leader of Liberal Party.
Became MP in 1965 for Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles. Succeeded Jeremy Thorpe as leader of Liberal Party in 1976. Made alliance with Social Democratic Party (1981-88). Led merger of Liberals and SDP in 1989. Presiding Officer of Scottish Parliament since 1999. Awarded knighthood in 1990 and life peerage in 1997.
