Became MP in 1965 for Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles. Succeeded Jeremy Thorpe as leader of Liberal Party in 1976. Made alliance with Social Democratic Party (1981-88). Led merger of Liberals and SDP in 1989. Presiding Officer of Scottish Parliament since 1999. Awarded knighthood in 1990 and life peerage in 1997.
