Art student and professional rugby league player. Had success with novel This Sporting Life (1960). Other novels include Pasmore (1972) and Saville (1976), won Booker Prize. First play was The Restoration of Arnold Middleton. Other plays include The Changing Room (1971), Life Class (1974) and Sisters (1978). Published collection of poems.
