Born 1858. Died 1958 - Scottish scientist and electrical engineer.

Pioneer in the plastics industry, known as “the father of British plastics”. Beaten by one day by Leo Baekeland to the patent for producing synthetic resin. Twenty years later they merged to form Bakelite Ltd in 1926. Elected FRS in1906.
