Born 1624. Died 1689 - English physician, known as the English Hippocrates.

Served in Parliamentarian army during Civil War. Studied medicine at Wadham College, Oxford. Used close observations of illnesses to distinguish specific diseases and through trial and error to find specific remedies. Wrote paper on gout (1683), noted symptoms of venereal disease (1675), gave his name to the mild convulsions of children and to the medicinal use of liquid opium. Studied epidemic diseases.
