Born 1819. Died 1899 - English sugar magnate, art patron and philanthropist.
Patented a method for cutting sugar cubes in 1872. Made fortune as sugar refiner. Founded the University Library at Liverpool. Tate Gallery in Millbank, London opened in 1987 which contained his own valuable collection.
