Became well-known as a character actress, roles included Miss Prism in The Importance of Being Earnest and Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit. Appeared in several films as Miss Marple. Won Academy award as Best Supporting Actress in The V.I.P’s (1963). Created DBE in 1967.
