Studied geology at Edinburgh University. First European to reach Lake Nyasa (Malawi) from the north. Went on to Lake Tanganyika. Expedition across the Nijiri Desert through the Great Rift Valley led to discovery of Lake Baringo and Mount Elgon. Also explored northwest Nigeria, Upper Congo and Morocco.
