Trained as accountant before turning to writing in 1936. Best known novels have an historical theme including the trilogy on the life of Robert the Bruce. Non-fiction work includes studies on Scottish castles and fortified houses. Nigel Tranter’s Scotland (1981) gives an account of rural Scotland.
