Appeared in small town variety shows. Master of the ad lib. Became well known as stand-up comic in revues and films such as Sailors Three (1940) and Champagne Charlie (1944). Entertained troops during WWII in Italy, Middle East and Far East. Compered Sunday Night at the London Palladium (1954-58). Chairman of Fulham Football Club (1955-76).
