Physician to Bridewell and Bethlehem hospitals. Conducted anatomical experiments and dissections. Published anatomical accounts of the lumpfish, rattlesnake, shark and porpoise. Known for work on a chimpanzee which he viewed as an intermediate between humans and apes.
