Born 1745. Died 1804 - Scottish journalist, scientist and balloonist.

Editor of second edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica which he worked on for seven years. In 1784 reached a height of 350 feet in a balloon, first person in Great Britain to have navigated the air. Fell into debt and fled to USA. Drowned while intoxicated in Salem, Massachusetts.
