Studied at Glasgow University. Travelled extensively in Europe and USA. Early publications include The Cold Wind of Dawn (1966). Lived in France and received many literary awards there including the Prix Medicis Etranger. More recent publications include Travels in a Drifting Dawn (1989) and The Blue Road (1990).
