for Mummers Play as your favourite British event.

It is a short play, about 10 minutes, involving an unlikely cast of characters, including St George, Bold Slasher, a dragon a doctor and Robin Hood, among others. No-one is very clear about the origins of the play, but all over Britain similar plays are performed, with very similar texts. The Tewkesbury version is a ‘living tradition’, in that the characters and script will change with circumstances, and to reflect topical issues. On Boxing Day it moves around the town’s pubs, starting at the Bell Hotel at 12.30 and finishing at 2.30 in the Berkeley Arms.
