Ted Danson stars as crypto zoologist Dr. Jonathan Dempsey in John Henderson's 1996 family drama 'Loch Ness'. Following his work looking for Bigfoot in America, Dr. Dempsey is sent by his employer to Scotland in an attempt to find out the truth about the legendary Loch Ness Monster . Despite his field of work, Dempsey is sceptical about the existence of the monster and is probably more looking to disprove rather than prove the existence of the creature. Events eventually lead him to a rather different viewpoint.

This film is unlike most previous films involving the Loch Ness Monster, most of which are horror films. This is a much more romantic movie aimed at the whole family. Dr. Dempsey encounters hostility from most of the locals, many of whose livelihoods are dependent on the tourist trade generated by the legend. He also finds romance, however, in the form of Laura the local Innkeeper (played by Joely Richardson). With her help and that of her children, together with the guardian of the loch (played by Ian Holm), he eventually discovers the truth but then must decide whether to share it with the world.

The legend of the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as 'Nessie', has fascinated visitors to the area for many generations. There have been many alleged sightings of the monster and even some apparent photographs of the monster, many of which have since been proved to be fake. The nature of Loch Ness itself compounds the mystery. It is the largest lake in Scotland in terms of the volume of water it contains The water is especially murky, due to high peat concentrations in the soil of the surrounding area. At its deepest point the loch is over 750 feet deep, that is over 130 feet more than the height of the BT Tower in London!

Whether or not you believe in the legend, Loch Ness is a simply stunning place to visit, with some of the most breathtakingly beautiful panoramic views you will ever see. There is a great choice of accommodation and a wide range of activities on offer. Loch Ness is an ideal base for visiting the Isle of Skye , The Highlands or the West Coast of Scotland in general.

The village scenes in the film were shot at the picturesque village of Lower Diabaig, close to Loch Diabaig and Loch Torridon. Accessible by a winding coastal path from Torridon, this village represents the mostly undiscovered and unspoilt parts of Scotland.
