BOOK COUNTY ANTRIM HOTELS

Ballycarry, Rathlin Island, County Antrim

Ballycarry, Rathlin Island
Rathlin Island is situated off the coast of County Antrim in Northern
Ireland. Rathlin is the only inhabited offshore island in Northern
Ireland. It is the northernmost point of the region and the most
northerly inhabited place off the Irish coast. Ballycarry is an area
of special scientific interest (ASSI) on the island and was designated
as an ASSI because of its important heath and wetland vegetation.
Constant exposure to wind and salt has lead to a characteristic
variety of plants. The ASSI has a large number of flooded hollows
forming peat bottomed lakes and ponds that support many rare plants.
Moss and lichen cover is high in this area.
