Corse Lawn, Gloucestershire

Review of Corse Lawn by Caroline Currie on July 12th, 2009
This is the WORST establishment I have ever had the misfortune to stay in! My partner and I have just returned early from a weekend break at this hotel, which promotes its self as a luxurious, warn and friendly country house hotel. We arrived on Friday evening and were greeted with a less than friendly welcome by the man on reception. He showed us to our room and promptly left, there was no mention of where breakfast was served, timings etc., no smile or welcome to the hotel. We are reasonable people, so as we had arrived at around 8pm, we thought maybe the man on reception had been working a long shift, so we made allowances. The following day, which was my birthday and the reason for our stay we booked dinner in the hotel's restaurant. When we arrived at the arranged time there was nobody around to greet us, show us to our table, or indeed tell us where we should go. After about 10 mins we were shown to a table and we ordered our drinks and made our selections from the menu. 40 minutes later we were still waiting for our starter to arrive, what made it worse after we had been seated and placed our order five other groups had entered the restaurant after us all been served, finished their starters and were eagerly awaiting their main course. My partner and I felt like we were completely invisible. We eventually managed to attract the attention of a passing waiter and explained our situation politely. What we were met with I have never experienced in all of my years of travelling and staying in many hotels all over the world. The waiter told us in a very rude manner that we should have pre-ordered our food, so it was our fault! We explained that if when we reserved our table we had been told this we would have pre-ordered our menu choices. The waiter just shrugged his shoulders and looked insolently at us. By this point we were no longer hungry and cancelled our food and left. There was no apology, no warmth and friendliness that this establishment promises on their literature....interesting eh?... Interestingly...most of these groups in the restaurant were non-hotel residents and in groups of four or more. It seems to us that this establishment is not interested in residents and certainly not just two people who are not big drinkers, obviously the cover charge for the hotel is much lower with the likes of us! Finally to finish our woeful story, we went to reception to complain to the manager and were given the same rude treatment. The lady manager called us liars and said that the waiter would not speak to us like that. She also said "everybody who uses our restaurant knows you need to pre-order" again we explained that we were residents (she was completely unaware and uninterested) and did not know this. After much rudeness on her part we decided to check out of the hotel early. For us our weekend completely ruined, my birthday celebrations ruined. If I am honest it was like a scene from "Fawlty Towers", or "You Have Been Framed"...I am still in total disbelief. I would urge anyone to think twice before choosing this hotel!
