County Durham Reports
Review of Barnard Castle by stan shaw on June 20th, 2006
I went to Barnard Castle School, my father was a builder and carried out many restorations on the Morrit Arms Hotel,(in the 30's ) and the hotel
was owned and run by an Italian Family.
The Hotel is by the Greta River with toll gates on the southern side of the Bridge.
I lived in Richmond, and was a border at Barnard Castle the Morrit Arms is about 5 miles from the Town. The area has a lot to do with Dickins and DoTheBoys Hall at Bowes. The Bowes Museum is next door to the School , and is steeped in history.
The Market cross in Barnard Castle is where the farmers came on Wednesday's (market day) and an aunt ofr mine from Bowes used to go there every Wednesday to sell Eggs poultry and home made Butter.
The Kings Head was the main Hotel in town, and next to the river was a leather tanning factory.
If the boys wanted to go into town, on Wedneswdays they had to get permission from the
House Master. Hope this information is of some use to you.
During the War, there was a military Hospital is a
large house downstream from the bridge, and a friend and I both fell into the river one day, and went there to dry out. the food was good!!
