Review of Lochgoilhead by mary (ross) pollock on February 17th, 2010
Lochgoilhead has always been a favourite of our family. Our grandparents had a cottage there since the early 1930's. My first visit was when my sister and I were only 6 weeks old (twins). We spent our summers there every year until we were around 15/16 years old.
As youngsters, we used to visit the Blairs' farm and buy our milk from them(fresh from the cows)
In those years Loch Goil was very serene, and the villagers very seldom left except for doing business in other towns. We also along with our brother walk the cows into pasture. The fishermen were cousins of the Blair's (same name)
They fished everyday, so we ate lots of fresh fish.
The local souviner shop was owned by the Fulton family. There was a grocery store and butcher shop. The post office is still there, and also the hotel. The church, which was the local school as well is gone now. Also part of that church there was a hall, and in that hall, we remember seeing the first movie ever shown in Loch Goil, starring Alan Ladd. This was in the forties.
We made lots of friends while visiting there and will never forget the wonderful times we had. Last year my husband and I visited Loch Goil while visiting Scotland from California. I know it has changed and pretty busy, but it is still a beautiful place and hope it remains that way.
We knew most of the people that lived there but unfortunately everyone has either left or passed away.
