Good Points: Clean comfortable bed, plenty of hot water, food and breakfast service very good, secure parking a very good feature. General ambience of hotel was fine.
Bad Points: Room 9 - Bathroom extractor fan extremely noisy, room lighting very poor, especially for reading. Lamp over dressing table did not work. Bedside lamp fitting loose and dangerous. TV had only two watchable channels, neither news channels.
General review: I am likely to be staying in Fareham frequently in future, and would use the Hotel again, but not room 9. Had room at discounted rate of £55 so did not complain, however would have not been satisfied with the standard had I paid normal room rate.

Sir / Madam
Tonight I enjoyed a pleasant meal at an Italian restaurant with my wife in Fareham. I decided to follow on from the meal by sharing a bottle of red wine at the Red Lion. It had been six years since my last visit when I stayed as a guest at the hotel. I was very impressed with the changes made to the décor and atmosphere and we enjoyed our drink. As the bell for last orders rang we decided to share another bottle before taking a taxi back to Gosport.
As I ordered a second bottle the bar staff entered into some gentle banter regarding the drinking of it within the required time and offered us help drinking it should it be needed. All this banter was given with good humour and received as such.
We enjoyed ¾ of our second bottle. The bell went for time. A member of staff (male, large) came down to the lower bar and asked if we were guests at the hotel. As we replied in the negative he told us to “hurry up”. It can only have been a minute after this that the same member of staff came down and told us that he was locking the rear doors to the premises. Meanwhile the bar had around five other customers present (lucky enough to be staying at the hotel). As this was the case I failed to see the urgency with which we should be thrown out on the street.
Being a responsible citizen of these fine islands I went to the bar to ask for a taxi. The staff member behind the bar told me to pop down to reception to phone one. As I descended the steps to find the reception I met the member of staff who had told (not asked) us to drink up. He had in his hand my wife’s wine glass ¼ full. He asked me in an extremely aggressive and totally unprofessional manner to give me my glass. At this point I finished the small amount of wine remaining and gave him my glass – calling him “A PRICK” – which was, given his attitude extremely light. I later found out that he SNATCHED my wife’s wine glass away in an extremely aggressive manner bordering on the abusive (almost assault) and causing my wife distress.
I understand that the law is the law and drinking up times are what they are, but we are a mature couple, well behaved and enjoying a nice night out together. The attitude of this staff member STINKS. Even if we outstayed our welcome, (which we find hard to believe as hotel guests were still at the bar!), we would expect to have received better treatment.
“Don’t come back” were the final words of this fine member of your staff. Well no worries there, no worries at all. I just hope for the benefit of future customers you introduce a bit of staff training. I realize now that this is going to be a case of our word against his and that this individual will worm his way out of trouble. YES – I called him a prick – he got away lightly – his attitude from the off stank. My wife has experienced life “behind bars” – she knows what its like to wait for people to drink up, but never before has she encountered such aggression.
I cannot envisage our drinking in the Red Lion again. This is a shame as it is an extremely pleasant venue free of noise and an extremely pleasant change. Such a shame that the actions of one member of staff ruined our night out. I can not over emphasise the aggression with which he took my wife’s drink and the unpleasant manner he took from the outset. It is his word against ours and I expect him to worm his way out of trouble – he is probably the manager anyway. At the very least please pass on our disgust at his unprofessional, unpleasant, unnecessary, venomous attitude.
Yours truly,
Bruce and Elizabeth Selby
