What a lovely old charming hotel. We stayed in the Aldhelm room, huge but with creaking floorboards. Lack of toiltetries in bathroom. Lots of cobwebs too. We were celebrating our Ruby Anniversary as well as Valentines day and were disappointed when we dined in what we describe as a hallway, the least cosy area of the dining area. Roses on the table were pink, not red, which we felt was cost cutting.
Bed was super comfy.
Breakfast was ok, sausage was to die for, but though we ordered full english, it came minus the mushrooms as advertised and when we queried it were told they had ran out of mushrooms, but were not offered anything to replace it. We were given 1 slice of wafer thin toast and sauce came in tiny jam pots which in quantity amounted to 2 small teaspoons.
We were not offered tea or coffee refills.
We paid £120 for the night and thought the hotel had great potential, but they appear to be cutting costs on the things which really matter and which would encouage guests back.
Most of the staff were courteous but not what we woul dcall friendly.

Bad Points: No soap in Bathroom, breakfast a shambles and table not properly laid up. The minute piece of black pudding was an insult and the extra charge for non resident breakfasts was not explained beforehand.

Good Points: Lovely staff, very clean, super food.
Bad Points: Wrong sort of room provided. When we asked to change we were told they were fully booked, which was clearly untrue.
The TV got terrestrial and ITV3 which I don't consider to be the 'terrestrial and choice of satellite programming' in the description.
The instructions on how to get there were frankly the worst I have ever experienced - we found it by sheer luck.
General review: After a dodgy start, it improved thanks to the very pleasant staff and good food.
