Although some may think it a bias review, being from Sidmouth, however I had to reply to the review by sheila sillick. I can only think she was confused and wasnt at the same Salty Monk! Please dont let that 'review' put you off visiting a fantastic restaurant. The food and service are always 1st class, possibly this person had a hidden agenda with the establishment - a reason for most people to write negative comments in my experience. Try for yourself and see if I am not wrong!

In view of its two AA rosettes, I expected a rather special meal when I visited The Salty Monk; however, this expectation was sadly misplaced. Ostentation, pretension and style above substance are the adjectives that spring to mind. Only five of the available tables were occupied, two with single guests, so the solitary waitress was hardly overworked; however, when I commented on the fact that the flowers on my table were dead, (whilst fresh on all the others, including the unoccupied ones) she simpered, turned and walked off, making no attempt either to apologise or to replace them. I cannot find any excuse for this sort of behaviour. The two amuse-bouches that arrived with my drink were unexceptional and unidentifiable; the coffee-cup of asparagus soup that followed was at least reminiscent of asparagus, but sadly, worse was to follow. I had chosen a starter of thinly sliced tomato, with Parmesan crisp, salad leaves with truffle oil dressing. The flavour of the tomato was non-existent, the Parmesan basket tasted stale and there was no discernible trace of truffle oil in the dressing. My main course of black bream with red wine sauce and rosti potato was equally disappointing, the bream lacking flavour and the "rosti" being a fried cake of previously mashed potato. The separately presented vegetables looked so limp and unattractive that I tried them only to ascertain that their appearance was not deceptive. The espresso that I chose to finalise my meal arrived in a glass, with matching glass of water - what was that all about? In conclusion, a very disappointing meal and one that I would not wish on any other innocent visitor. In my opinion, the proprietor of this restaurant should be looking to his laurels, rather than resting on them.
