Living 20 mins away from the Malt Shovel my wife and I visit regularly.
Whether you are looking for a lazy sunday lunch or romantic evening meal this Pub is just the best. The food has always been superb and the service exemplary! We visited on one occasion with friends and the whole area had a power cut. The staff worked through, by candle light with the chefs cooking on portable stoves and it was still fantastic!!
One final point that prompted me to write this is the previous review. The "Manager Lady" is, in my opinion, one of the best people I have ever come across in terms of service. Perhaps the menu here doesn't lend itself to childrens meals, but I am sure she would have done all she could to satisfy!

I was sorry to read in the Hawick News on-line that David Gaylor's is to close down after so many years. I was born in Hawick and my uncle Harry Campbell (now deceased) used to take me into David Gaylor's as a wee boy to buy photgraphic equipment and materiels. As a result of my uncle's interest in photography, which he encouraged in me, I became up a professional photographer for over 35 years. I bought my first ever photgraphic enlarger at your store. I now live in Essex. Very best wishes for your future.

On this date, 7 of us went for Sunday Lunch, to the Malt Shovel where we have previously eaten on many occassions and always very much enjoyed,, however on this day things were so very much different. Essentially, the food was still of high quality, except they had run out of both cod and monkfish ( which we initially ordered and then had to re-choose another main course) We also ordered the "house" rose champagne as per the menu, only to be told after that they had stopped offering the rose version..we then opted to have a bottle of normal "house" champagne and were served just a glass !!!! For the childrens meals, we were given a choice of which we opted for chicken and chips (the usual favourite ) and the childrens meals were served after ours??? and the chicken was spicy/cajun which was far too spicy for them. We were never pre-warned about this, so sent them back. The manager lady then told us that they did not have normal chicken and so the choice was to either have the other type of chicken which was marinated with "white pudding" or indeed have the cajun chicken "washed" to try and remove the spices. We agreed to this, but the children failed to eat the chicken still when it re-appeared. When pudding time came , we ordered pistachio ice cream , only to find they had also run out of this. Considering we were eating at 1.30 (prime time Sunday Lunchtime( they had run out of an awful lot of items. To make things worse, the Manager Lady was very un-helpful and seemingly un-interested in any of our problems.
