Staying here for a couple of days while the youngest son 'headbangs' at Kenbworth's annual Rock Festival - we ended up banging our heads against a brick wall!
That's because the room itself was fine, but the manager has no basic communication skills.
He offered a (paid for) drink in the guest lounge, after which a manager from one of the two other House Hotels Group B&Bs arrived on a social call. This manager more than made up for our host's awkward silences with his inane comments about Big Brother, and by letting his dog play-fight with the Avalon manager's dog among the other hotel's guests' dirty washing, which both hosts saw fit to empty onto the lounge floor.
The next morning, in the breakfast room, we were left to help ourselves. Whether or not this was actually self-service was guess work, as we were greeted by no-one - apart from our host manager's aforementioned dog, which this time was running free and wild among the guests eating the breakfast they had prepared from the central table. Very hygienic!
The following morning, the manager was present at the reception desk, but when we enquired about breakfast the response was a curt 'grunt' - as far as we could make out, he was saying: 'no breakfast - gas is off'.
No apology, not even a goodbye.
So we left silently with empty stomachs - but a very sour taste in our mouths.
Will we return?
Only if we win the lottery - and then, only for the comedy value, before heading off to a decent hotel which can offer a warm welcome and warmer food.

Further than thought from St Albans (too far to walk unless you are young/fit). Clean but very disorganised especially when they have a few people in. Went without breakfast on morning of departure as gave up waiting at 9.45am. So dont be in any hurry!!!!

The hotel has recently changed hands and how noticable it is too! The rooms have all had a good clean out and have been refreshed! The new linen looks clean and fresh as do the freshly painted walls.
The whole place looks cleaner and the atmosphere and staff are more friendly. Its a delightful and convenient place to stay, with all the comforts of home thrown in, including the use of a residents lounge and a soft drinks bar!
Breakfast is also much improved which is great start to the day! Well done to the new management - keep up with the improvements!
