My partner and I have been to the Pilgrims a number of times and the food and service have always been excellent! Last time my partner and I had the beefburger and we both agreed it was the best we'd ever tasted. This is definitely our favourite place to eat in Battle.

I am the owner of Pilgrims Rest in Battle. The customer making a complaint not only knew the restaurant had changed, also said the steak was cooked to perfection although they didn't like the sauce. They also didn't pay for any of the meal saying that nothing more would be said on the matter and now think it is totally acceptable to plaster every available trip advisor type site with a complaint. I would ask that you remove these comments as they are not factually correct. Many thanks

We have been to this restaurant before on Valentines day 2008, and had a very good experience and were looking forward to our meal. We arrived at pilgrims and was told by a waitress to 'go and find a table, any one!' We sat down on these old creaky church chairs infont of an old wooden table with cumbs and sticky drink on it! (with no table cloth! something you would expect in a pub!) We were given the menu with silly font (they obviously thought it looked clever!) It had a funny combination of food the only thing i reconised was the garlic mushrooms so we ordered that. The boy who served us had jeans and trainers on and had clearly never waited before as he did not know what 'pinot' was, he kept dropping cutlery and saying 'thats fine!' to everybody he served. The galic mushrooms arrived and they had a bizzare grey glupey sauce with a very stong taste (only thing i can describe it as was it tasted like vodka!) More bad service later and we then had the Fillet steak (£19.50 each) i do not mind paying this as long as it is good. But the fillet was definatly not 8oz (as described on the menu) and it was not cooked Medium as i had asked, it was rare. The sauce (pepper) was runny and very watery, it was like soup on my plate! We had 'hand chopped chips' that were deep fried and under cooked as they were very soggy and raw. There were no mushrooms or vegetables on the plate, just a very dry lame piece of salad that was drowning in the runny pepper sauce. I had two mouthfuls and could not stomche anymore. The 'waiter' (boy) came to take away our plates and he asked if everything was ok as he should have noticed all the food still on the plates, and we said 'no' we breifly said what the problems were and gave up as he clearly did not get it. My partner went to speak to the person in charge and found the 'manageress' who then said that 'i didnt cook it, here's the chef!' After my partner complained to the chef and told him he is not willing to pay £75.00 for what we just had, the chef then agreed that the quality was not that good and said we can just pay for the wine. With that we gave them £20.00 and left. We will never return there and i was so disapointed as i just wanted a lovely romantic evening together, we never bargained for the cold brash atmospere with the very strange choice of music (dirty dancing) for a beautiful old listed building this choice of music clearly did not fit. If you are thinking of eating there i would strongly advise not to, we have now found out that there is new owners and they clearly do not know what they are doing. i wouldnt want anybody to be as disappointed as we were.
