I had booked a room at the Ship via e-mail as I am deaf as I a week before I was due to stay there because. I did not get a reply and the night before I was due to leave home my partner had to phone and was told that “we don’t take bookings over the internet”. Why advertise your e-mail address then? When I got to The Ship, the outside looked like a traditional English Pub. There was no parking except for a municipal carpark at the rear of the high street which was not secure. I was asked to pay £25 cash in advance before been shown the room. In hindsight I realise why this was and from the number of insect bites that I now have, I should have turned about and gone elsewere. The room was basic and dirty. The heating was not working and there as no plug in the basin. The toilets were not clean either with urine on the floor. I did not brave the showers.

I booked The Shop by phone and gave my credit card details in case of no show. When we arrived, there was no reception area so we had to go in to the bar where a barman kept telling us that children were not allowed in the bar after 5.00pm and demanding £100 cash immediately (£45 for double bedroom and £55 for family bedroom) since they didn't take credit cards. We were pointed to a cash machine the other side of the street. He proffered no other information. All else had to be got out of him by specific questions - which he did answer - we then discovered that there was no food either evening or morning available in the hotel. This had not been mentioned when I booked.(The sign outside the pub says Bed&Breakfast and two years ago breakfast had been included in the price.) The rooms were clean and basic - but no soap provided, no plug for our washbasin, no milk for tea in the family room and the tea cups had not been washed since the last occupiers used them. Bearing in mind the family room overlooks the street and a street lamp shines in the window all night - the thin curtains were less than useless. The staff were OK but unconcerned about the problems. We left the keys in the bedroom doors on Sunday morning because there was no one around. I cannot recommend this establishment to any one - if the new owners are really trying to build up a business then the effort so far is nowhere near good enough.
