No atmosphere Cold Unwelcoming This used to be a great village pub with great atmosphere, fantastic food and welcoming hosts. The directors of Sam Smiths need to get a grip and put tenants back in - not managers...how many have tried and failed in the past 20 years? Smiths Try the following.......... Serve homemade food - Not microwaved pre-portioned frozen food. No food is being served at present - not even sandwiches! Redecorate and put carpets on the floor. Put experienced tenants in who care about the work they do. Or Sell!

I have eaten lunch here a few times over the last 18 months and never had cause to complain. A few days ago I went with my wife, arriving shortly after 1pm. There were about 8 people enjoying a meal and being served, and we gave our order within 5 - 10 minutes and were served within a short period. My wife had Hunters Chicken and was really impressed with her meal and the home made chips. I had a curried chicken dish, which was not over-spiced, and enjoyed my main meal and the chips. We were treating a friend who, although not hungry, was impressed with the draft beer. Great atmosphere, peaceful, no background noise, comfortable and warm, prompt efficient service, good pricing. I would recommend this Inn for a drink or a meal.

It is so sad to see the demise of this lovely Pub. It used to be really brilliant, with superb food and always very busy. Yhey used to serve a fantastic roast dinner and everything else was always so good. We made regular trips from Warrington. Would not visit now though. How sad. Lovely village nice building, needs a new lease of life. What are the Brewery doing?

After a long walk around Over Peover,we were ready for drink and eats. So we arrived at The Old Parkgate Inn at 16.40 and ordered a drink as a sign stated food was served between 5pm and 8pm. We took menus from the bar and chose a table. Refreshed, we went to the bar at 5.10pm and ordered our meals only to be told by the barman that the chef actually only started at 6 but we decided to wait. At 6 we tried to place an order and was told that the chef was arriving any time now and they'd let us know. By 6.15, no-one had come over to let us know, so we went to the bar where another barman told us there was no food served that night and that the other barman who had clocked off had known that!!! There was no apology and no attempt to provide any decent customer service. We went to the Drovers Arms where the staff were friendly and attentive and the food superb. We won't be going back to the Old Parkgate Inn!!!!

Beautiful old inn, lovingly maintained in a delightful setting, but a sadly disappointing dining experience. I'd read several good reviews and was told on the phone I wouldn't need to book and that there were two vegetarian choices. When we arrived, we were told we should have booked but were begrudgingly shown to a table, as if as a huge favour, though the restaurant wasn't very busy throughout the whole of the lunch period. Of 2 vegetarian choices, one was 'off'. The only other 'option' was broccoli and cheese crumble. I try not to eat cheese for other health reasons, but will eat it if pressed to do so. I was told the chef would make Thai green curry for me, despite it being off the menu. A half hour after we'd ordered, I was told there was no rice! Would I like chips or boiled potatoes. With a Thai curry?! No thanks! Naan bread would be fine. What I was eventually served was a large plate of broccoli and carrots from the vegetable sides with a few red pepper and mushroom slices in a thick globby sauce that seemed to be vegetable gravy (I hope!) mixed with curry powder. It was revolting and I left it after a few mouthfuls of veg with the sauce scraped off as much as was possible. I was given two naans, which were OK, but one was enough. We were asked by the waitress who came to collect the plates when we'd all finished if everything was OK. I said no, sorry, it wasn't very nice. She giggled. My fellow diners were only fairly satisfied with their meals. The gravy on the roast was 'globby' and the roast potatoes were hard. Not great service or staff attitudes generally. I will never come here again - and I would advise you not to.
