A proper old fashioned hotel, said to be the oldest in the country, complete with that wonderfully welcoming real hotel smell - predominantly good coffee from centuries of breakfasts. We were in Buxton for the opera (discounted for those staying in the town) located just 100 yards from the hotel which conveniently serves excellent post-performance suppers in the wine bar: we had the steak and chips and the pork ribeye, with bread and butter pudding and profiteroles to follow. The wine list is well-chosen and pretty reasonably priced, and the service very pleasant without being at all intrusive. Lovely comfortable bed for eight hours of deep and dreamless, then up next morning for blowout breakfast again served with a smile, and lashings of that priceless coffee. I can't think previous guest at The Hall Mary Queen of Scots had a better time, we will definitely return for another night at the opera.
