Had chosen this pub on the basis it was listed within the AA 2007 Pub Guide.
To cut to the chase, the food mainly consisted of greasy chips, tinned vegetables and poor standard meat.
As for the decor with rotting benches in the beer garden and wallpaper peeling off the walls. This is one establishment I will only recommend to the health department.
I hope it is removed from the guide next year.

My friend and myself visited the recently refurbished Bird I'th Hand in Gathurst Road today and had a most enjoyable time. Our three course meals cost £6.95 each and this was such good value. I had breaded mushrooms on a bed of salad with a garlic dip, sirloin steak served with chips, peas, carrots, mushrooms and onion rings followed by a piece of orange and lemon gateaux with cream. Each course was well presented, hot and tasty and left me encouraged to visit here again. I have already told two different sets of people about it and the day is only just over!

I went to the bird i'th hand just afew days after it was beautifully refurbished. A very friendly atmosphere with really good service and sociable and friendly staff. I had a perfectly cooked 3 course meal for just £6.95. Which consisted of a freshly made mexican salad which was really well prepared and very tasty. For my main course i had a mid week roast with homemade roast potato's which were cooked to the highest standard and were exquisite. Tender and mouth watering beef with a thick serving of gravy. Lovely pub inside, very friendly and attentive staff. Meals on a weekday (up until a certain time are 2 for the price of 1). 2 for 1 menu and a la carte menu very extensive and reasonably priced. When starter arrived (1 x garlic bread and 1 x vegetable soup) was disappointed with portion of garlic bread for the price, but tasted lovely, and soup did not taste like freshly-made soup but was still nice. My main course was grilled minted lamb chops with roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables (carrots & peas). Lamb in red wine gravy was absolutely gorgeous, however I was disappointed with the vegetables and potatoes - roasties weren't proper roasties - more like frozen variety - and vegetables were pre-prepared. My suggestion would be to pare down the menu. Too much on it which obviously doesn't leave enough time to cook everything from scratch. Had it not been for the veggies my meal would have been absolutely perfect. Would deffo eat here again but only for 2 for 1. Had I paid full price for my meal (paid £10.70 for 2 starters and 2 main courses, which I think is really good) I would have been disappointed. But the restaurant is nice, as is the pub and the staff.
