I have visited this establishment many times over this summer due to recently moving to the area, and I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere the staff provide. The garden is also suitable for my children and dogs, which is ideal when stopping for lunch or dinner on the way back from a family day out. The food is lovely too and I have met the chef to thank him for my meal, and I do not feel the last review represents this establishment. If your looking for well sourced, seasonal and local food that is cooked superbly, then visit this pub.

My husband and I visited the Dukes Head after seeing it had recently been taken over. We stopped for lunch and were welcomed by very friendly staff who gave us a menu to look at whilst having a drink in the not so beautiful garden as advertised. We were amused to see many spelling mistakes in the menu, which should have given us and indication of what was to come, after placing and order of 2 pork and stuffing sandwiches we moved inside . The pub itself was charming, the food was not, thick dry stale bread, tasteless filling, very disappointed! We will not be returning especially as since our visit we have heard nothing but bad reviews not only about the food but the arrogant new comers that have taken over.

Terrible! What a way to end a great weekend! Stopped in for lunch at the dukes head. I found the waiting staff to be friendly and helpful but our lunch radpidly went down hill! My girlfriends dressed crab salad was obviously off and it was duly returned to the kitchen,and a blt sandwich ordered in its place. When i came to pay imagine my disgust as i was told in no uncertain terms that the chef/owner was expecting me to pay for the crab salad on top of the rest of the meal.I asked to speak to him but a compromise was not reached. Hes best described as unapproachable arrogant and condesending! I paid for the food and duly left. I will not be returning and cannot stress my dissapointment in the establushment strongly enough. Terrible food and a terrible attitude towards customers.

Our first visit was excellent from the moment we arrived. We were greeted by friendly staff, there were lots of tempting dishes on the menu and the dining room was clean and comfortable. Food was delicious, well presented and reasonably priced. Service was great. Looking forward to our next visit!

Food is fantastic can honestly say that my food was exquisite and my husbands was equally great The chocolate cheesecake was sublime and this is from someone who rarely eats desserts.My husband said the beer is good and the staff seemed different each time but were very friendly and attentive and one felt that they truly cared whether you had enjoyed the visit We will definately be returning

We have driven past this attractive pub on very many occasions but had never stopped. We decided to stop for dinner yesterday and had a lovely meal. We understand that the pub has been closed for the past 7 months and has just reopened (I don't know if it is under new management). I had the roast lamb and my husband had the beef and mushroom pie (with shortcust pastry - just as it should be). Prompt, courteous service and piping hot food. Good beer and very reasonable prices. My pudding of chocolate pot with hazelnut biscuits was the best dessert I have had in a long time. We will certainly stop again.

Disappointing - will complain, but not expecting a reply. Beer - mediocre
Food: good for the wife - poor for me; returned meal to chef as they had plastered food with herbs which was totally unnecessary and to which I have an allergy to find on re-presentation they had just brushed off the worst of it... INEXCUSABLE. Staff - dreadful, except the waitress who was obviously embarrassed but very pleasant.
Woman behind bar - rude, unhelpful and plainly does have no idea how to manage customers. Took three attempts to get the bill right – still not right so just paid and left. If you want service – JUST KEEP DRIVING

The Dukes Head looked promising from the outside. An attractive building and lots of cars in the car park. On entering there was an enticing aroma of fresh food and the staff were friendly. The menu was rather pricey for a country Sunday Pub lunch - £25 for a fresh turbot as a main course -but we settled for a seafood chowder at £14.
The staff were very 'high profile' interrupting diners as they were speaking. Did you want some bread? NO. Oh sorry I was ear wigging and thought you wanted some bread. The man looked a bit perplexed.
I pointed out at the end of the meal that about 90% of the clams were unopened. My partner went to pay for the meal and a waitress suddenly appeared with a plate with three opened clams on it (there were at least 10 unopened clams that had been returned). 'The chef wants to know if you want your clams?' I had long since finished my meal by then and the plates had all been cleared away. I said - in the same perplexed manner as the man with the bread question - NO.
I would not wish to eat clams which had been presented to me closed. This is a specialist seafood restaurant and the first rule for clams, mussels and oysters - is watch for the point at which their shells open. That means they're done. Throw out those that stay closed.
The Chef made his point and I will make mine - we won't be back!

Magnificent pub with emphasis on great seafood and wow, the moules really are as scrumptious as they look. All complemented by exceptionally good service, to the extent we believe the management must put all staff through charm school. we'll be back again, and again. Very soon.

Pleasant meal and surroundings spoilt by the extreme discourtesy of staff at the finish of the evening, when instead of telling us that they wished to close the garden down and obviously wishing to finish, the time being 11pm, lights were switched off leaving the outside of the premises in complete darkness, and upon being requested to provide lighting to enable the guests to reach their cars, this was curtly refused with no explanation.
Would not recommend a visit.

Remember us Drinkers!
Ive been a great lover of the Dukes Head in Romsey for some time now,but my heart is now broken.
after a hot summers day I felt a drive out to the dukes head would be the ideal pub to have cool drink and relax in the lovely well shaded garden,this I have done many times and have always felt welcolmed,rather special sometimes,however I can only say now that nothing is forever...After purchasing our drinks we were made to feel that we were not welcome and we were quickly ushered out the frout of the pub,as the back garden was all booked with number tables for eaters only.We were told this was the only space to sit,what a shame I thought..as the shaded garden with its large sun brolleys has always been its many attractions.
Due it still being very hot(7pmish) the trout farm opposite was very fresh in the air and it was very smelly,I do feel a little awarenesss could have been shown here by the owners, as this was the only place us Second class drinkers could sit.
I can strongly suggest that some citrenella scented candles could have been put on the tables(great for strong smells in heat and for keeping bugs at bay)
You can even get candles in bottles which you hang from plants/trees etc.(ive seen these in many pub garden/sitting areas.
I felt that the main focus was on the resturant,however this is old country inn without any mod cons and that has been its beauty for such a long time.
I know it has had a resturant for some time now,ive eaten there myself( when it had a french chef),however drinkers seen to be being pushed out.Is the Harevester approach the future here?
