After a 6 hour drive to Manchester, upon arrival at the Merchants our party of 4 were told that our booking 'had been tip-ex'd out' thus leaving us without rooms. The owner was trying to cover his own back by repeatedly telling us that 'I've only recently taken over the hotel and I have lots of new staff to please, but it wasn't me who tip-ex'd out your booking'!! WTF! He told us that he had 2 rooms left but wouldn't let us have them as "It would not please the staff if you took them". Only after a lot of arguing would he actually pick up the phone and call other hotels to get us a room. It seems that everything is too much trouble for the owner/staff of the Merchants, and he would rather please his staff than the guests. This hotel and its staff are an absolute disgrace and I’m sure everyone will agree that this is not the way to run a hotel.

Good Points: The location is excellent, though the immediate environment is a bit scruffy. Man in charge very competent and willing.
Bad Points: Noise from the ventilators on the building across the way.
General review: Expensive by French standards for the quality of furnishings and service.
