traveling back from a well earned break to inverness we passed through fort augustus we stopped in the centre of town and went for a leg stretching walk along the water beside the cannel we noticed opposite us 2 nice looking pubs we ventered in to the one called the lockinn it was liking taking a step back when pubs where friendly and a nice place to visit which do seam to be in short supply now.we were created by a friendly staff memeber behind the bar who when asked for suggestions gave us a comprehensive run down of the available food and advised on a suitable drink from there selection of whiskey we both sat and wondered at all the wall fixing and the history that went with the place we also where shown upstairs to a wonderful second dining area which had wondeful views overlooking loch ness we both thought this would be a wonderful place to come back to in the summer too and make good use of the beer garden next to the locks (which i guess is how it got its name) when we returned we asked about accomidation in the town and were given some good recomendations about that too the food was excellent and we really couldnt fault the service and respect we got from all the staff after a nice relaxing meal coffee and cake we continued our trip home much refreshed and much contented thanks from us to the staff at the lock for a wonderful stop off and a real pleasure of an afternoon doug barr

We have just spent a week at Fort Augustus on holiday, and what a lovely place it was to spend a week. There was six of us and after avery unfriendly welcome at the Bothy, we discovered further up the road the Lock Inn. The Lock Inn was great, the food was really good, the staff were very warm and welcoming nothing was too much trouble and the atmosphere was great. I and my family would recomend to any visitor to Fort Augustus walk past the Bothy and head straight for the Lock Inn and you will not be disapointed.

We discovered the loch Inn, Fort Augustus after been told 3 times by the bothy there was no tables and they were not prepared to put tables together for our group of six. When we went into the loch Inn it appeared to be small and not much seating however when asked at the bar we were directed upstairs which will seat a further 40. They have a set menu and also a speacials board which changes daily, we all tried something different each night. The food was delicious and good sized portions, excellent value for money. The bar is well stocked with many kinds of whisky. The staff were very friendly and knowledgable . We will be going back next time we visit

Two couples, one from Canada the other from Ireland spent a week in Fort Augustus, a quiet village situated on the shores of Loch Ness. The Lock Inn is situated next to the canal locks connecting Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal, and it is the only inn situated next to the locks that we recommend. The other inn, (Bothy Inn) is closer to the bridge, and the first one that tourists would see but management there needs to make a serious attitude adjustment to some of their staff, the folks behind the bar on the three nights we visited could not help us when we asked about the differences between whiskey’s, and food wise, two evenings in a row we were unceremoniously told there was no table for us, though numerous tables were empty. Not very welcoming to visitors. So let’s continue on a positive note with the Lock Inn: When travelling around this part of the country you might be tempted to only stop for a quick visit in the local souvenir shops, or drop in to the hotel at the top of the hill for a drink or use their internet link to catch up on your e-mail, that would mean you are going to miss one of the nicest and warmest inn’s in this part of the country. The Lock Inn not only serves excellent food ( there is also an upstairs dining room by the way) but the owners know their single malt whiskey’s very well and they prepare a pretty good espresso. But do not forget that eating establishments stop serving food at 9 PM, so remember to arrive early, and be patient about getting a table. Have a drink and then check to see if there is a table available on the second floor. You will find that many food establishments will not take a reservation, due to many visitors booking tables and then not showing up. The food prepared at the Lock Inn is excellent, with large portions that might make you want to think twice about having a starter and a main course, the deserts including their home made trifle are all quite exceptional. The wine list is very good and too pricey. One tiny note about service upstairs: One young waitress who came to take our order was asked what the daily specials were, she replied that we should get up and go read about them on the blackboard ! You might find that after your meal, taking a brisk walk around the town, then coming back in for a few pints that are pulled to perfection or testing out the wiskey’s available behind the bar is necessary, after all, how many times will you be visiting this part of the world. I discovered on our last night in fort Augustus that the Loch Inn had a bottle of Strathisla 1964 single malt! The perfect way to end a Scottish holiday. Sadly I could not find one to take home! And here are current driving times: Fort Augustus is a one hour drive from Inverness and a 6 ½ hour drive from Stranraar. Remember tourist buses can be slow on some of the narrow parts of the highway.

My husband David and I were traveling through Scotland on holiday this past April. We stopped to have a pint in Fort Augustus. We spied the Lock Inn and had to go in. And glad I was that we did. It was a chilly damp day, but the atmosphere inside the pub warmed our bodies and souls. We met some wonderful people. The barstaff were trememdously friendly and welcoming. Wanted to know all about us Canadians. We met a lovely gentleman who is a native of Fort Augustus, Mr.McNocher. He was a truly wonderful human being. I will never forget him, or our visit to the Lock Inn. I highly recommend a visit!!! Patti Craig Nova Scotia,Canada
