we arranged to meet friends for lunch but were advised by a cleaner that they didn't open for another 30 mins. it was cold and wet but nevertheless we set off to look at the small lake on the other side of the pub. we hadn't got very far when the proprieter called us in, showed us to a table close to a log fire and pomptly brought us a large jug of fresh coffee with buscuits.our friends duly arrived, we had a excellent meal, the staff were great, and we wern't charged for the coffee. i have no hesitation in recommending this pub for its food it's atmosphere and service.

Walked in to very pleasant and welcoming staff up until the point that a different member of staff made us feel very unwelcome with the words "we dont do push chairs" Dont bother going to this place if you have kids. Non starter

Pant Yr Ochain is a stunning venue and it's a shame the same can't be said about the food we were served. My wife and I had roast beef. We found it tough going. The roast potatoes were revolting, they'd been burnt and were full of oil which flowed out as soon as I stuck my fork in them. The veg looked like it had been hanging around for some time. I wished I'd stayed at home and made dinner myself as it would have been of a much higher standard. A real shame.

The Pant yr Ochain has in my view fallen considerably in quality over the last couple of years or so, and seems to be living ON its reputation rather than UP to it.
My wife and I went there last night. I had a pigeon breast salad which was essentially about four pieces of lettuce with 2 very small pieces of overcooked pigeon. I then had a 10oz rump steak which contained a very large piece of grissle. At £16.95 this should simply not happen. My wife had a vegetarian dish which was moderately good, but unexceptional.
I didnt' choose a pudding because they are all unimaginative and very expensive. My wife had what they called a fig slice, where the effort was on presentation rather than substance (and served to justify my choice of nothing!)
The meal for the two us came to roughly £50, which is in my opinion vastly overpriced.
But it's no good complaining withouh suggesting a way forward, so here we are:
They need to change their menu more frequently and pay more attention to detail and quality rather than presentation. Either that, or cut their prices by at least a third.

The food could possibly have been the best I've ever eaten...it's that simple. We had American friends over for a few days and went Sunday afternoon; four adults, four main courses, three puddings and all for just under £60. The sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream was to die for! I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the Pant-yr-Ochain to anyone.

I am such a big fan of the Pant yr Ochain that I felt a need to redress the tone adopted by the previous reviewers regarding atmosphere etc. I am a vegetarian and I am always so spoilt for choice regarding the menu, I am glad I don't have to choose from the wide ranging meat and fish menu as I would be there for hours trying to decide. I always have to take issue with parents who ask for a separate "child menu" - why should we enjoy quality food whilst restricting younger diners to fish fingers, nuggets etc. I have often visited with my son who has chosen from the main menu with relish! As a primary teacher, I find the policy adopted by the restaurant far from being child unfriendly - there are plenty of establishments which offer the requirements of a previous reviewer - let us just have a place of sanctuary now and then.
The Pant is still one of the best places around, delightful atmosphere, fab food and excellent friendly staff - we travel nearly an hour to get there and we are never disappointed.

I have always enjoyed going to 'the Pant' despite the limited variety offered on the menu - the atmosphere is lovely, setting is stunning and delicious food. Something that made me overlook the overpricing of the food, because I enjoyed going there so much.
The same could also have been said about my most recent visit, except that the menu was better (no less than 3 choices for my tastes - the best yet!)
However, the service and attitude of the staff could have been much much better. The saying 'the customer is always right' bears no meaning here, and if you have a complaint, it will fall on deaf ears.
To say that my minor concern (food quality) was treated with distain is an understatement. The chap I spoke to (I was to later to find out from the Pant Yr Ochain web page that he is the Assistant Manager!) was beyond arrogant. Expect no good grace or even the hint of an apology - you will not get one.
I have decided to never go back, and will encourage my friends to do the same. There are far friendlier places to go that has food of a far higher quality.
not worth a visit - very very disappointing.

Have just returned from a Sunday lunch at Pant-yr-Ochain and whilst they could never claim the title of being the most child friendly restaurant, one cannot help feeling the place has now been taken over by the child-catcher from chitty chitty bang bang.. The previous failure to provide a children’s menu or highchairs (please don't take solace in thinking you will be able to feed small children in their pushchairs, these are now banned from the main restaurant) has now been totally eclipsed by the notice upon entrance informing patrons of how a previous ban on children has now been lifted with the exception that children are supervised constantly. The reason for this ban, we were informed was because some children and their parents had failed to recognise that the Pant-yr-Ochain was a restaurant basically meant for adults. At such a warm reception I wanted to turn back home then and there but with a ninety minute journey from Manchester combined with three hungry children, whom are always supervised, I decided to steel myself for the possible horrors which lay in wait. Images of marauding, rampaging, children were merged with those of 'adult' themed establishments. When I entered the restaurant I didn't know whether to expect 'Lord of the Flies' or Stringfellows. My fears proved unwarranted but I hadn't got three paces within the inner restaurant doors, when we were politely prompted/reminded that our fourteenth month old daughter's push chair would have to go outside. As there were no highchairs this also meant that she had to go outside too.. I felt as unwelcome as if l had entered with three 'happy slapping' 'hoodies' not my four year old son, his barely toddling sister and my twelve year old niece. From the shushing noises made from fellow diners accompanied by children I gathered they felt as welcome as we did. If you have a baby or small children don't even think about eating there in less than perfect weather or God forbid winter! I have eaten at the Pant-yr-Ochain on and off for five years. My husband and I visited as a treat. It was a long journey from home and with drinks proved expensive, but the settings and surroundings were extremely pleasant and the food was simple yet delicious. Our lunch today can best be described as banal, the menu we chose from had an air of a place which is trying too hard, yet failing to deliver. Did we complain I hear you ask? No we did not. A previous complaint of dissatisfaction had been rectified with a money off voucher to be used at the restaurant. Sadly the last thing I wish to do is spend any more time or money at Pant-yr-Ochain. From the other empty tables at this once very popular restaurant, one cannot help but get the feeling that others feel the same. Incidentally the child-catcher has also removed the children's play area which was previously situated so far out of sight and ear shot from the restaurant that it was impossible to eat your food outside and watch your children play.....

Have visited many times. Always very happy with the beer, food and surroundings especially in the summer outdoors overlooking the lake. Everything is of a high quality ans, while not cheap, is very good value
