Yesterday my family and I went to eat at The Oliver Twist Pub for a meal with family. (6 of us) We generally have meal out two to three times a year as a family unit and it has always been here.
Let me make one thing perfectly clear from the outset. The Pub has changed hands in the past six to eight months...
We ordered our meal from a substantially reduced menu than that which we were previously used to. (Of which four of the six admitted was not really to their liking) Two of us spotted a specials board across the far side of the room and were grateful to see two familiar dishes, which we ordered.
Food was palatable, but certainly NOT A La Carte, more basic pub grub. My daughter had ONE vegetarian choice…. Mushroom Stroganoff or go without! Thinking back, it could all have come from packets in reality, except the meat, which anyone can throw in a grill and time.
Dessert however, was another matter. Again limited and with several dishes either limited or off completely, despite colour photos still in the Menu to tempt you... And what happened next was unforgivable. My dessert had sour cream over it and I ate around it. My husband had sour cream served with his coffee and when we complained, we were given ANOTHER pot of sour cream!
In the end he had milk in his third cup of coffee.
By the end of our meal, we felt in the way and were the last people in the pub... Two large families were turned away from the bar and told no food would be served as it was after 2pm (2.20pm) and when we were chatting in the car park (3pm) a third party turned up, only to leave again a few minutes later....
I presume having been told no food was being served.
I find this situation completely alien to say the least. Hot food could and probably should be limited to meal times, however, it is understandable that people will continue to travel throughout the day and may turn up just as their strict food supplying times end. To turn these people away is Business suicide! A sandwich or Paninni would have been fine to offer them! As it were they lost their custom then (and most likely forever) and they will tell friends to avoid this place. It is a wise man who remembers that someone who has had a poor experience will tell all his friends… Word of mouth will destroy a once thriving business in weeks.
I only have an inkling as to whom the present owner is as he failed to introduce himself and made no effort to approach his patrons. However, my husband claims he saw someone at the bar personally turning people away, so I guess that was him.
I am afraid it is doubtful that we will be returning and I presume neither will the other three parties that were turned away…
One word....avoid

Myself and my husband went to the oliver twist for a meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary, it looked good on the web site, I only went because the restaurant looked nice and it promised A La Carte which I love, well we weren't seated in a restaurant at all but the bar lounge, we waited ages for our meals even though it was mid week and not at all busy, when the food finally arrived it definately was not A La Carte, it was just thrown on a plate, like any pub grub, which was not what we expected for the price, then we waited so long to be asked if we wanted anything else, we gave up and just had the main meal, we will not be going there again, and we told our friends how dissapointed we were and told them not to go.

Having been take to the O.T. for a family meal ,i was very impressed, the service was good, the food very good,all in all we had a great night out,we will return, cook by trade so well done.

We decided to go to the Oliver Twist for Mother’s Day lunch and I was delighted when having looked at the website I found they catered for “special diets” as for medical reasons I have to follow a gluten free diet.
They boast a fine wine list – even though we were drinking wine from the glass we were never offered the wine list and the white wine from the bar was at room temperature. Indeed we had to ask for our drinks to be served whilst having our lunch and many people were going to the bar whilst having their meal.
Although they advertise that they cater for “special diets” the only starter I could have was the melon – although the chef offered – and I accepted – to cook me a piece of cod as the haddock was in a béchamel sauce made with wheat flour – which I was truly amazed at.
All our starters arrived except mine – in fact everyone else had finished their starter before I even got mine.
We ordered 1 beef dinner and 3 turkey dinners and 1 gluten free turkey dinner at no point were we offered any sauces to go with our dinners (cranberry, horseradish, mustard) – the chef did make me a gluten free gravy. However my turkey meal was just a pile of meat.
We only required two puddings one of which was from the cold pudding selection – it would have been nice to have been offered cream. Also there was no suggestion as to what might be available for me.
With a meal for 4 two courses and 1 three course coming to over £90 it is not an experience I will be repeating.
