The Royal Oak is now under new ownership. I am pleased to inform that the bar has been cleaned up and painted and a lot more is being done to improve the pub and beer garden generally. They have a new chef and are now offering a good, value for money, comprehensive menu. I have eaten there recently and the food was excellent. My only observation was, that having had a starter I could barely struggle through my main course. The real ales currently on offer are Sharp's Doombar, Adnam's Broadside, Ringwood Best and Ringwood Fortyniner, all of which are usually in very good condition. The pub is dog friendly and is popular with walking & cycling groups. The natives are generally friendly too.

Nice pub, nice location, good atmosphere but if you are thinking of eating there my advice is don't. Shambolic would be the most appropriate term to describe what we experienced. It was one of our group's birthday, so we were looking forward to a good evening. But sadly it was spoilt by the poor quality of service and a landlady who didn't know how to say sorry. It took ages for any of the waitresses to take our order, then one of our group received their starter a good 15 mins before anyone else. We had to wait an absolute age for the main courses to arrive and again they didn't arrive at the same time. And the food was cold; cutlery was not provided; orders were incorrect and we were given wine that it turned out was for another table. And when we started to express our frustration the landlady was almost dismissive of our complaints. And then to top it all off we were presented with a bill that bore no resemblence to what we had. And we were not alone. An awful lot of guests seemed to have a problem either with the food, service or the bill. Back to the landlady did we get an apology when we spoke to her at the end of the meal - we did not, in fact she worked hard to avoid us and when I finally tracked her down she simply said that she was busy with another group of guests. We might just have caught the pub on a really busy night but we shall certainly not risk visiting the Royal Oak again.
