My partner and I were enroute to Southampton to join a cruise ship. We wanted to start our holiday off somewhere 'nice'. We drove down the stunning driveway towards the beautiful hall and we're very excited about what we saw. This illusion was soon to be shattered. We checked in and were then told 'to get to our room, go out the main hall, turn right through the stone arch to the lodge'. We did this, the path was poorly lit and led us past several service buildings to what can only be described as 'holiday camp' style buildings. Our room was small and stuffy. The bed was small, the tv didn't work properly and on closer inspection the room itself was grubby. Disappointed we returned to the hall to eat. The food was extortionately priced so we left and went to a local bar where we had a beautiful meal at a reasonable price. We then returned to the hotel and our room. Neither of us slept too well. The bed was uncomfortable, the room stuffy and the building very noisy. The next morning we returned to the hall for breakfast. There was a queue of approximately 20 people waiting to be seated for breakfast. This was only the first disappointment. We were eventually seated some 20 minutes later to find that most of the buffet style breakfast was empty or maybe a lone dried up egg or rasher of bacon. There were people waiting for these to be refilled which was a very long process. Eventually we sat down to eat. We asked for some toast and were told 'it will be brought to the table'. We placed this request THREE times being given the same answer each time. Still no toast. Eventually I asked a different older member of staff who brought us 'cold' toast. The younger waitress was extremely rude flashing dirty looks at us. To be fair to her, if the manageress had not been running around red faced and steaming at the ears, with proper instruction she may have been able to do her job satisfactorily. On checking out I asked at reception for a feedback form and none were available. I was given a piece of paper and told to write my comments. All in all this was very disappointing and I would not return to or recommend Eynsham Hall to anyone.

Good Points: Building and grounds are very impressive; and kept very well. Most of the staff were very helpful and polite. Bad Points: The swimming pool, one of the reasons I booked was very cold! The presentation of the corridor to the sauna was a bit shabby, having to step over the hose pipe, turn lights and the fact that the sauna was in each of the changing rooms so if you are a couple you can not sit together, which was not satisfactory. General review: The pricing was very good, the hotel is impressive, the grounds are lovely. The contemporary touches are charming and very smart. Breakfast was very good.

Good Points: Beautiful gardens and main hall - nice bar. Bad Points: We stayed in the Cottage which was dark, dingy and full of spiders. General review: Good if you can stay in the main hall.
