I was staying in a Brecon B&B on business. I wondered into the town to get dinner and came across The Puzzle Tree. I went in it was quite busy and ordered my meal. It was below average at best, certainly appeared that most of it was out of a packet and was fairly expensive,,.. but the best bit was that the credit card machine was not working so "CASH" only, and then to cap it all I asked for a receipt to claim the meal back on business expenses and was presented with a hand written PostIT note. No printed details of the restaurant and NO VAT number. I asked repeatedly for the VAT but was told that they don't give it out. Guess what my expenses were rejected. Something very flaky about this place.

Just been to the Puzzle Tree in Brecon. My husband and I had a very nice meal, lots of choice, the service was good and everyone was very pleasant! Are there 2 Puzzle Trees in Brecon I wonder??

If only I had read these other reviews first! Over the past 12 months my family and I had visited The Puzzle Tree on several occassions and until 6 months ago received excellent service and fresh hot food, this was not the case in our last 2 visits. 2 months ago the staff were rude unattentive and sloppy, not having a clue what they were doing and seemingly not caring. The main course was cold within 10 minutes, served on cold plates with small portions of vegetables, the dessert orders were wrong and we requested a replacement twice, all received with well practiced resentment! We sadly decided to put it down to a one off and try again, sadly the performance was repeated, though this time the service was worse. We waited about 20 minutes for them to clear the plates at which point we expected to be asked if we would like desserts (clearly they would rather we had just left), we then had to ask if we could order them. Upon delivery we then had to ask if we might have cutlery? The final straw was going up to pay expecting to be asked how the meal was, only to be barked at by whom I pressume is the owner/manager "£59.60", to which I reply "I'm sorry?", she said "£59.60, 4 dinners, 4 desserts, 3 coffees and drinks, £59.60". We will never go back to this 'local pub for local people', where they seem to think cold food, appalling service, and ignorant staff is what people want on a family day out in Brecon. Do yourselves a favour and don't go to The Puzzle Tree, in fact do everyone a favour and tell all you know to stay away.

I have never experienced such a disturbing meal as the one I ALMOST had at The Puzzle Tree in Brecon. I ordered leek and potatoe soup and was looking forward to a lovely crusty roll and some good ole fashion warming Welsh food - the soup came cold and with a scary pale brown/green hue, ignoring this I bit into my bread to find it was stale around the crust (Rock hard in fact) and chewy on the inside - as though it'd been cooked hours earlier and then heated in the microwave!!! I mentioned this to the waitress who then got the manager involved (instead of offering fresh bread). I was told by him to: "Stop being silly". I was speeachless!! I demostrated the hardness of the bread by trying to squeeze it - they were'nt having any of it and we were told to leave - before my partner's meal had even arrived!! We had been polite all the way through and were amazed that we were being ejected for complaining. As we were collecting our refund and telling the manager that we had never experienced such rudeness before, one of the customers chipped in with "Just leave will you - we like it here" On later reflection I realised it was probaly a good thing that we did'nt eat there because when I went to the ladies, I was met with two toilets "pebble dashed" with pooh. A result of actually eating the food maybe? They say a lot can be said about an eatery by how clean the bathrooms are kept, I think we got off lightly!!! We ended up at the George Hotel just down the road and the food, staff, atmosphere and prices were excellent!! Would steer clear of the Puzzle Tree at all costs.

The prices were arrogantly overpriced, the staff a group of what seemed like work experience school children, a chef that was sat at the bar drinking on our arrival and a restaurant area filled with dirty plate filled tables. I have never felt so disgusted by the appearance of a place since eating in a Laos street cafe.

This was our second visit, out of desparation and hunger, and we wont be giving it a 3rd visit. We ordered 2 simple burgers, but they only had 1 left, and we had to go back to the bar with our other order. When the burger did come it was delivered in a defrosted, mangled bun, which looked like it had been at the bottom of the freezer for 6 years, and the defrosted in the microwave. We got a rtefund for the 2nd meal we bought, not the actual burger, and the woman serving us was very patronising, dreadful, avoid at all costs. Whilst we were there the menus were removed as if making food was too much trouble!
