We stopped at the George Hotel for one night and whilst the staff were very friendly and the evening snacks and breakfast we had to eat were very good the accommdation was a total disgrace.
We were shown to our room on arrival and it was cold and felt damp and smelt nusty. The decor was very poor with peeling painted wallpaper and dirty skirting boards.
The bedding and towels were very clean and of reasonable quality however, the bed was extremely noisy and creaked at any small movement. All in all not a good nights rest.
The shower was not very pleasant at all, with mouldy wall tiles, pipes and fittings and a shower door which we could not close.
The mugs and teaspoons which had been left on the tea tray were absolutely filthy, so uninviting that we would not even boil a kettle to sterilise them.
We arrived at the George after a particulaly tryng day and in normal circumstances we would not have accepted the room and would have moved on to other accommodation.
We mentioned our concerns to a memeber of staff at breakfast and we heard her telling the owner. He did not bother to introduce himself or speak to us about our problems. We will certainly not be returning to the George Hotel or recommending it to any of our friend.

Icy car park and it wasn't much warmer inside even though we sat next to the open fire. Starter took ages to arrive (escargots and prawns) - we'd eaten the bread by the time it arrived and for £6 the portions were minimal and not well presented. Mains came out in quite quick succession and looked lovely - venison was a generous helping on a soggy rosti , game pie tasted like beef and was full of frozen veg ( sweetcorn, peas and square carrots). Veg that accompanied it all was blatantly out off the freezer and tasteless. Chips accompanying the game pie were from the freezer too. We also got offered to leftover potato dauphinoise - no thanks!
Overall - potential to be excellent but not worth the price paid.

I have never posted a review before but feel obliged to warn people about the terrible standard of food at the George. It is of a mediocre standard and is so overpriced it is unreal. A group of 6 paid over £21 for the George Nibbles Starter and we had enough for 2/3 people max. Explain how you share 3 chicken wings between six people?!! We worked out the whole dish had cost no more than £3 from Iceland and thrown into a deep fat fryer. When we complained we were told we could have more but would have to pay for them. The main courses varied in standard from below average to acceptable. The pies were probably the best option. We were a group of six professional women who did not deserve the abuse the staff gave us on our way out. Don't worry...we won't be returning!!

A snowey iced night in a taxi 20 miles the George!!
WOW!!What an absoltutely fantastic evening, the warmth of greeting by the staff and then the blast of a finely stoked fire,on a particularly cold evening and a RECETION busting round of good beer and whiskey has proved to make me a believer that ONE can stll enjoy WHAT I believe is OLD ENGLAND.(hooorrah!!)
I would without a doubt or reservation reccommend, the hotel, and the Steak with a sauce(Homemade)and the Chicken Kiev,it was absolutley beyond my expection!!!!
**PS I dont have affiliation to the Hotel ,just try it for yourself,IT IS WORTH AGO and well worth the trip**

This hotel has a lot of charm and character. Very clean and the bed was big and comfortable. The employees were top of the line. Very helpful and friendly. The food was the best we had in our 2 week stay in England.

Having read some previous reviews were a little bit worried - which proved to be needless. OK the acconmodation is basic and a bit dated, but good value for money, everything clean, extremely friendly and the food absolutely fabulous. Would go again tomorrow if I could, and quite easily recommend it.
Wasted on vegitarians - although they are catered for - as the steaks are amazing, and probably not the best place if you're on a diet! Hoping to go back again next year for a longer stay.

I stayed at The George in July 2009 and would highly recommend it.
The staff there were very nice and the owners looked after me very well.
The food in the evening was great and with 600+ whiskies to choose from you cant go wrong.

My husband and I visited the George with some trepidation after reading the reviews on this site.
No need at all; the food and service were all of an acceptable standard.
We went to the pub as we were doing some family history research in Leadenham and a pub is always a good place to start! We were right; the lady who worked in the kitchen was able to answer some of our questions.
We each had a drink and were served ably by the chap behind the bar who aknowledged that food was still being served but it would finish in 10 mins (at 2pm).
Asparagus with hollandaise sauce (or plain/buttered) was on offer. As it had just come in to season we both opted for that, and both also opted for calves liver with bacon & onions in sauce on a potato rosti.
We sat outside as it was such a sunny day. The asparagus and the sauce were outstanding. The liver dish was lovely though I felt the rosti was too oily and not crispy; my husband enjoyed his. We were given an accompaniment of fresh, steamed veggies (delicious) and a huge bowl of chips. Very good food and good value for money.
Perhaps ownership has changed since the previous reviews; it's only fair that an up to date review is posted to encourage people to visit our lovely country inns. Recommended, with relish!

We travelled to Lincolnshire to attend the 60th anniversary for the end of WWII, in which i was a fighter pilot. I stayed at The George Hotel for the weekend and i can honestly say the two years i spent in Belsen concentration camp after being shot down over occupied Holland was more enjoyable than the weekend i spent at The George Hotel. The accommodation, the food and the service i recieved at Belsen were far more enjoyable than those at The George, although the staff were nicer as the Germans were a mite cheeky.

The service at the George is awful. We arrived at about 12.45, the restaurant/pub was not at all busy but it took 20 minutes for an order to be taken. One hour later the waitress brought the wrong food. The food when it eventually arrived was "OK" - this establishment adopts the rule that quantity of food can compensate for quality. The barman tried to explain that the reason for the delay was that my wife had ordered the breast of duck and this was "cooked from fresh" - how long does it take to cook duck breast - 15 minutes at most? It then took 20 minutes to prepare two irish coffees! There is no excuse for service like this, especialy in a pub that was almost empty. A great pity that such a nice pub/restaurant is spoilt by such poor and unprofessional service. To cap it all they gave me the bill for the wrong table!
