Spent 6 days in Ambleside recently and, having eaten a most enjoyable meal on our first day, we readily booked dinner for the remainder of our stay. We were treated courteously by owner and staff and were most impressed with varied menu, generous helpings, and availability of tasty fresh vegetables. The restaurant was full each evening with people being turned away disappointed, not having pre-booked a table. We look forward to returning at first opportunity. In summary - healthy food, well presented, and served by very pleasant and efficient staff.

Had a cracking meal with my wife & to daughters. 3 courses including steak :) Needed a quick meal b4 going to cinema & service was excellent & very very reasonable would/will return next year. They dont open late so best to eat early to avoid going somewhere that charges more to keep open a half empty restaurant until midnight HA.

My wife & I along with 2 friends visited this very same establishment, only a few days earlier than the writer of the previous review. We also were 'greeted' by a lady in her 50's (no doubt the same one). We were ushered to a table located next to the door to the kitchen and given menus to study. A few minutes later she returned to take we our order. We commenced by ordering 2 bottles of wine, followed by 4 starters dishes. Next we placed an order for 3 main dishes with my wife requesting a second starter as she was feeling a little unwell and didn’t really fancy a full main course. Well what came next was just unbelievable - "The minimum order for any one person has to include a main course or I can’t serve you". After requesting clarification on this point we were so astounded by her attitude and inflexibility we decided to walk out and find somewhere else to dine. After strolling a short distance up the road we spent the evening at the Queen's Hotel where we found the staff there to be very pleasant, the food of good quality and representing excellent value. A little footnote to the owner of Ambles – Amazingly, the cost of the 2 starters were greater that the cost of 1 main meal (which presumably could have been ordered without a starter). As a result of your ‘rules’, I estimate you lost in the region of £70 on our order alone. How any business can afford to do this during the worse post-war economic recession this country has seen, is absolutely beyond me. Graham (Leicestershire)

My wife and i along with our 20 months old daughter were impressed with the menu, style and cost at Ambles. On our last night in the lakes we decided to dine their. Taking advantage of their early bird menu from 5 pm.
On entering the totally empty Ambles Bistro (5:30pm Fri 3rd July 09) we was meet by a member of staff, a lady in her 50's. She looked horrified as we walked through the door. Conversation went:
"sorry we dont have push chairs in here"
me: "Ok, any reason why?"
"We are not insured for them"
me: " OK, i will leave it outside "
"We dont have a children's menu"
me: " Thats ok, my daughter as eaten, its just my wife and i"
"I'm sorry you would have to make a reservation, if theres three of you"
me: " there is no one in here? "
At which point my wife was so embarrassed she asked me to leave with her and find some where else to dine.
If Ambles has a no children business plan, then that i totally understand and respect. However i found her continuous excuses insulting and distressing.
Ambles, please make it clear if you dont want children in your restaurant. May be display a notice in your window.
