The Avenue Inn is by far the best of the three pubs in the area. The Avenue offers a friendly atmosphere,fantastic home cooked food and the beer is well kept which cant be said for the other two! Out of the three pubs the Avenue Inn offers value for money all round. Being a local in the village of Shincliffe for over forty years, No wonder I walk fifteen minutes up hill ignoring the Rose Tree and the Seven Stars as I pass.

The Avenue is a pub with a truly unique character and probably one of the best you can find in the North East. Jeff and Tracy provide a very welcoming atmosphere with excellent home-cooked food and B&B accommodation. The Avenue offers a good range of lagers and real ales and the beer is always of the highest quality. For anyone who likes pub games, The Avenue provides the opportunity to play darts and to participate in dominoes competitions, particularly on Thursdays. There is also a regular pub quiz each Monday.
The pub is at the heart of the village High Shincliffe, which is situated in a very nice part of Durham, surrounded by open countryside. The main city centre with the historic castle and cathedral can be reached by bus within less than 10 minutes and less than 30 minutes by foot. You can always be assured of a warm welcome in The Avenue and you will make many new friends during your stay.
I would recommend it as a great place to stay in for anyone who plans to visit Durham.

My husband and I had a lovely two day stay at at the Avenue Inn bed and breakfast and had a really enjoyable visit. We were made to feel very welcome by the locals and Geoff and Tracy did everything they could to enhance our break, from simple directions to various places to going out of their way to get medication for me when I suffered a sudden migraine attack!
We found the room to be clean and comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. We ate there for one night and found that the menu was very varied. I had the fish, which was excellent and my husband had the pie, which was homemade and full of meat (unlike some places where they are all gravy and pastry). Although we weren’t there for Sunday lunch we were told by the friendly regulars that they are the best lunches in the area.
There is a selection of real ales which pleased my husband no end and he tells me they were well kept. We also noticed that The Avenue is Cask Marque Accredited, which apparently means something to real ale drinkers!
The bar does have a late licence so I suppose there could be some noise heard in the letting rooms but we honestly were not bothered by any.
Overall, if you are looking for clean, friendly accommodation with good food and a good selection of drinks then The Avenue Inn is the place to stay.

A really wonderful Inn, in a lovely quite area but within 10 minutes driving of Durham City. Right outside the front door is a great bus service straight into the City for those no wishing to drive.
The family bedroom was comfortable, very clean and suprisingly spacious.
At last an establishment that really does serve home cooked food. The menu had a nice balance of your traditional foods and your modern pasta dishes,all were generous portions.
The proprietors Geoff and Tracy were wonderful hosts and the local residents warm and welcoming.
We are looking forward to returning in the future
